65 Years.
It's hard to believe that 65 years ago people like my Grandfather were storming a foreign beach. My grandfather was not in the invasion force, but other people's were. Other peoples Dads, Husbands, Sons, and future Grandfathers were trying to invade an occupied country to defeat a well defined, well trained, well positioned enemy on Normandy, Utah, and Omaha Beaches. I had a history professor in Undergrad say that World War II was truly a Global War. Every Continent on the planet was somehow affected by it.
Today the United States and most of Europe acknowledged and commemorated the 65th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion. President Obama was in France participating in a ceremony at the American Cemetery with the President of France. In my humble little town of Abilene, KS people have come far and wide to celebrate Dwight D. Eisenhower's involvement in the D-Day Invasion. His contribution was rather significant so the events taking place on his Presidential Library grounds here in Abilene, KS are rather large.
This morning started off with a parade through downtown Abilene. Your's truly was actually in the Parade. Part of my summer of fun in this mildy small community is participating in the Community Band. Today, the Band boarded a flatbed truck...well, semi really...and played marches as we were driven along the parade route. The tuba players were on back of the truck. It was semi scary...it was windy, sunny, and thank the good Lord the truck went slow!
After the Parade people started gathering on the Library Grounds. The Salina Symphony performed some great patriotic and big band tunes. There were speeches and some really big, scary helicopters that flew over the grounds. The scary helicopters were really neat. Nothing makes me more proud or patriotic than watching those big, scary, helicopters fly over and look very grandiose! I am THE most proud knowing that they don't shoot at me.
After the concert and the non-shooting-at-me-helicopter flyover, I walked around the Grounds and looked at the Exhibits set up. The 10th Mountain Division from Colorado was there. The guys were in full historical gear and about 90% of the artifacts were actual items from the WWII Era Military. The 101st, 501 Paratroopers had an exhibit too. Ya'll might know them as the "Band of Brothers." They had an actual parachute and believe it or not and actual German flag that had been captured by members of the 501. I saw a Sherman Tank, what a German camp might look like, modern military equipment from Ft. Riley.
People were in peroid military uniforms and civilan costumes as well. The women's dresses were so neat. They had the hat, heels, red lipstick, gloves, and was color coordinated.
It was really neat to see. I saw a few of my students there too. I'm glad that their parents thought it was important for them to see and experience the day.
65 Years. How different would our country and planet be if...
Thank you Veterans
