  • For you M

This entry is for my cousin M who keeps encouraging to blog more.  So here's to you M.  I have a couple of stories from teaching and a great weekend story to tell from Saturday.

First story:  This is a funny thing I saw while teaching music to the Catholic Kids.  I teach at that school in the Gym.  Nice sound system and big floor so kids can get up and moving around without running into each other and getting hurt.  The lower grades do alot of partner stuff to learn to work as a team and to get used to the idea of being partnered with someone from the opposite gender.  This one 2nd grader, A, (reminder I don't use names) was partnered up with a gal and they did the song fine. The song had hand claps and knee pats etc. I told them to quietly come back to their seats and sit down and this kid CRAB WALKS perfectly back to his seat and sits crisscrossed like it was something perfectly ordinary to do.  His belly was right side up and he was crab walking on his hands and feet like he belonged on the beach someplace.  He scurried just like a crab too. It was the funniest thing.  I couldn't stop laughing.  I wish I had his abs.

Second Story:  I work with the Afterschool program at the public school.  Its extra pay and one really gets to know the kids.  One student and I, C, have an ongoing rapport with each other.  He gets a bit out of control and I ask him "C do you need to come hold my hand until you can control yourself"  This is a fifth grader mind you...a Kindergartner would have come and wanted to hold my hand, C usually shrieks and yells "NO" and he gets the idea to calm down and focus.  One of his classmates "D" who like like to call Big D cause he is so tall heard me asked C if he wanted to hold my hand.  Big D goes on to say:

"Miss Buller you should go on match.com"

    "Why?" I ask

"Because you must be desperate if you are asking a 5th grader to hold your hand"

I couldn't stop laughing.  I had to walk away to laugh.

Saturday (31st) Story:  I got to see "Wicked"  It was mom's idea back in August.  She paid for the tickets and lunch and ice cream afterward.  The entire musical with FABULOUS!!  It was better than going to the movies!  More expensive but just way better.  The music was great, costumes, lights, effects.  Just wow.  The bad thing about stage performances is that once the song is done, you can't rewind to see it again.   Oh how I wish the could have.  It was amazing.  I have never seen "The Wizard of Oz" but I know the general idea of the movie (duh how can I not, I'm from Kansas) so seen the witches' perspective was really neat.  What a great way to spend an afternoon.  Musical and Mom.

Hope you enjoyed the post M!  Hugs to you and A!

  • Funny Kitty...

Ok, I haven't written in about 2 months but nothing funny nor fun happened to me this summer.  Boring, relaxing summer.

Today however on of my kitties caught my attention.  During dinner tonight I was sitting on my couch enjoying my Tuna Helper Tetrazzini when Mattie caught my attention.  I am always wary of open food on the counter tops and stove.  The kitties  love hopping on counters.  So Mattie exits the kitchen with something in her mouth.  I started busting up laughing thinking it was a Tetrazzini noodle, which are like spaghetti noodles just shorter, in her mouth.  Normally I would have scolded her for eating people food, but I was laughing too hard.  I looked closer at the thing in her mouth which she had put down to play with when I realized it was a twist tie from my loaf of bread. Those are deadly to cats so I had to take it away.  She looked at me like she was going to attack me for taking away her toy.

    Funny Kitty.

  • A Sign of the Times

So, I have a small following of people who ask for pictures of my crochet projects.  I have been working on two different projects.  I cannot post pictures of one of them on my blog as the future recipient of the Blanket reads this blog.

However, I became bored with my normal crochet stitches and wanted to learn a new pattern.  So, I choose to try to figure out Granny Squares.  Now if you don't know, Granny Squares look like this:

    009

They are pretty cool to crochet and are not that hard.  I made the ones in the picture.

So what is my "Sign of the Times"

I didn't learn how to make Granny Squares from my Mom, Grandma, Aunt, or other woman family member. The process of crocheting is usually a Pass to the Next Female Generation Skill. None of my women family members taught me how to crochet.  I learned to make some of the basic stitches in college while sitting around drinking cocktails with a bunch of TBSigma Sisters

I learned how to make Granny Squares....on YouTube.

So I started producing Granny Squares in droves and eventually got bored.  So I was interested in attaching together all the Granny Squares.  Once again, I didn't ask my Mom, Grandma or Aunt to show me.  I went to YouTube.  Here's what I have done so far:  I hope those who read this like the colors!

    007

It's not perfect as it is my first try, but I think I'm getting the hang of Granny Squares. YouTube is a valuable tool for learning new things. I do wonder if there isn't something lost in learning to make Granny Squares (or any other Generational Skill) on the internet versus sitting near my Mom or Grandma(s) or Aunt(s) on the couch or kitchen table with macaroon cookies on a plate and a glass of iced tea nearby.

  • D-Day

    65 Years.

It's hard to believe that 65 years ago people like my Grandfather were storming a foreign beach. My grandfather was not in the invasion force, but other people's were.  Other peoples Dads, Husbands, Sons, and future Grandfathers were trying to invade an occupied country to defeat a well defined, well trained, well positioned enemy on Normandy, Utah, and Omaha Beaches.  I had a history professor in Undergrad say that World War II was truly a Global War.  Every Continent on the planet was somehow affected by it.

Today the United States and most of Europe acknowledged and commemorated the 65th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion.  President Obama was in France participating in a ceremony at the American Cemetery with the President of France.  In my humble little town of Abilene, KS people have come far and wide to celebrate Dwight D. Eisenhower's involvement in the D-Day Invasion.  His contribution was rather significant so the events taking place on his Presidential Library grounds here in Abilene, KS are rather large.

This morning started off with a parade through downtown Abilene.  Your's truly was actually in the Parade.  Part of my summer of fun in this mildy small community is participating in the Community Band.  Today, the Band boarded a flatbed truck...well, semi really...and played marches as we were driven along the parade route.  The tuba players were on back of the truck.  It was semi scary...it was windy, sunny, and thank the good Lord the truck went slow!

After the Parade people started gathering on the Library Grounds.  The Salina Symphony performed some great patriotic and big band tunes. There were speeches and some really big, scary helicopters that flew over the grounds.  The scary helicopters were really neat.  Nothing makes me more proud or patriotic than watching those big, scary, helicopters fly over and look very grandiose! I am THE most proud knowing that they don't shoot at me.

After the concert and the non-shooting-at-me-helicopter flyover, I walked around the Grounds and looked at the Exhibits set up.  The 10th Mountain Division from Colorado was there. The guys were in full historical gear and about 90% of the artifacts were actual items from the WWII Era Military.  The 101st, 501 Paratroopers had an exhibit too. Ya'll might know them as the "Band of Brothers."  They had an actual parachute and believe it or not and actual German flag that had been captured by members of the 501. I saw a Sherman Tank, what a German camp might look like, modern military equipment from Ft. Riley.

People were in peroid military uniforms and civilan costumes as well.  The women's dresses were so neat.  They had the hat, heels, red lipstick, gloves, and was color coordinated.

It was really neat to see. I saw a few of my students there too. I'm glad that their parents thought it was important for them to see and experience the day.

65 Years.  How different would our country and planet be if...

    Thank you Veterans

  • More Funny Stories From Teaching

So today and yesterday have been an interesting couple days.  The students are going crazy and their behavior has been mostly good, somewhat squirrley, and some "suspendable" behavior too.  Anyway today one of my 4th graders told me a joke/brain teaser.

    Wanna Hear it?

You're gonna anyway...because it is my blog...so there...

Student: "A Cowboy rode into a town on Friday. Three days later he rode out of the town also on Friday.  How did he do this?"

Me--after contemplating the answer for about 30 seconds: "I don't know, how did he do it?"

Student: "His horse's name is Friday"

    Pretty good huh?

  • Why oh Why?!?!?!

Why is it that the month of May seems to just drag along? January went by in a blip, February a blur, March..way too fast, but May....soooooo veery sloooww!

I keep thinking how much I have to do at my schools, but can't. I still have to be a teacher...or pretend to be a teacher. So many of the teachers I have talked to say they are cutting off grades early, having movie afternoons, or having a spontaneous extra recess. The days just move sooo slooowww.

  • Here's another one!

    Here's another funny teaching moment!

Today my 4th Grade were coloring in their Instrument Families Book and for some reason one class got on the subject of pets!  The kids were telling me about their dogs, cats, hamsters, pet calves shown for 4-H at the county fair,  (remember, Ike Town is rather ag orientated), and other animals.

The class was cleaning up to leave and the kids were trying to get in the final pet comments before exiting the Music Room when one student came up to me and said:

"Guess what Miss. Buller, my dog only has one nut."

    My immediate reaction is:

"Ew, that's gross, go back to class"  (remember they were leaving anyway)

The rest of the class was laughing at my reaction and he was rather bewildered at my reaction and why other students were "ew-ing" too.  Matter of Fact for him, gross for everyone else.

I will say it again:  Kids are FUNNY!!!

  • Funny Teaching Moment

Ok, for those who like my funny teaching moments here is one for the blog....

On Monday I was introducing a new game to the 5th Graders called "El Floron."  This is a Spanish Language Game-Song played sitting in a circle.  El Floron translates to The Flower.  During the song the "Flower Child" goes around the circle and puts the flower in the "Flower Getters" hand.  The students have their eyes closed (hopefully) and are holding out their hands.  When the song finishes the students close their hands, hide them behind their bak and open their eyes.  The "Flower Child" then gets to call on other students in the circle to guess who may have the Flower which is really a dry-erase marker.  The person who sucessfully guesses the person with the flower gets to be the new "Flower Child."

So, on Monday on of the fifth grade classes and I were playing and that rounds Flower Child called out a student to guess.  The student's name is Marco or Marcos. He is a Spanish Language Student who is fluent in both English and Spanish.  His name in the gradebook says Marco but he calls himself Marcos.

Anyway, Marcos name was said with the just right inflection:  here's the dialouge:

    Flower Child, "Marcos"

    Me: "POLO--wait--opps"

By this time all the students were laughing including Marcos.  I was faciliting the game, but i was also on my laptop doing other things while they were playing.

The "POLO" was totally instinctive and just automatic, out of nowhere.

    sigh...teaching is funny.

  • My List of Wildlife!

Ok, since I have moved to Ike Town, I have been sort of keeping a list of weird, odd, and wild animals that I have seen in the city limits.  Small towns have their quarks, but some of these seemed far fetched.

    Here is the list!

Skunk crossing K15 in the fall.  Please refer to an earlier blog entry regarding my astonishment.

Bat in the Schools.  Once again, and earlier blog entry will explain.

A Racoon waddling on the side of the road.

Bunnies in my back yard.  My headlights seem to spook them and *hop* *hop* *hop* they run away just to come back and poop in my back yard.

Finally, this weekend I was watching a DVD on my computer and I look out the window to the north and the tourist train was running again in preparation of the Easter Weekend Tourist Train thingy.  I was watching the train move from east to west and lo and behold two Wild Turkeys run through my back yard.  I went out to look at them closer and *POOF* I couldn't find them

    I hope I didn't imagine them.

  • Spring Break Project

Ok,  it's Spring Break.  I try to have a couple of things to do over break to keep me busy.  My big project was was to paint a few walls here and there in my house.  My landlord is a sweetie and is gave me permission to do some "accent" walls as longs as the colors were not obnoxious. What I thought would take a better part of a week, took a weekend. All of my walls were a color called "Icicle Mist" Translation:  WHITE!!  White everywhere.  The entire interior was repainted prior to my move-in which was fabulous!  However, the white was becoming very intense.

I just painted walls and areas that I looked at the most.  For example: the wall opposite my couch and bed and toilet.  I also painted my entire hallway.

Here are some pictures of the completed walls:

    002

I think the TV is running Jon and Kate Plus 8!

    004

    Hallway color: Spring Fawn.

    005

Before Mom exclaims "PURPLE!"  Let me stop you and say its Violet Sky!

    007

My Bedroom facing the closets: Color: Artic Sky

    010

    Ball o Painter's Tape!

The whole place fells so much softer and I have leftover paint if I want to do another room/wall. The Prep is the pain in the arse!
